How to Celebrate Korean Halloween for Foodies

I’m not one for dressing up and going to parties and having fun (!) at Halloween. Heaven forbid. But in general it’s not a big celebration in Korea. There are some small events for children here. And foreigners and locals who want to party go to Itaewon. I prefer a more sedate affair with one of my favourite pastimes – eating. So I will celebrate Korean Halloween with a festive muffin.

At this time of year, this muffin shop in a Seoul subway station always makes me smile.

According to the Manoffin website (where we are invited to ‘enjoy muffin life’) they sell a range of muffins including walnut, chocolate, green tea, New York cream cheese, and strawberry brownie. And at Halloween and Christmas they do a special range. Here’s a peek at a previous year.

We’ve been treated to all sorts of quirky characters from pigs dressed as devils to ‘poop ghosts’. The pig devils are black tea muffins with pink cream on top, the mummies are strawberry fondue jam muffins, the pumpkin muffins are made of …yes you guessed it …pumpkin and pumpkin seeds with pumpkin coloured cream. My favourite character this year has to be the blue monster with the Oreo mouth. But the ghost is cute too. (pics from the Manoffin website)
