Samgyetang instant noodle soup only in summer

In summer when it’s tradition to eat samgyetang chicken and ginseng soup, this limited edition of samgyetang noodle soup appears on the shop shelves!

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to instant noodles in the Korean supermarket. And yet new noodles and flavours still keep appearing. This noodle soup isn’t available all year round though – it’s only on sale in summer!

I must say that the actual contents of the pot noodle don’t quite live up to the image on the packaging.

The picture suggests that we are going to be treated to a whole chicken when we peel pack the lid. However, – prepare for shock – there’s no whole chicken inside! I couldn’t spot any dried jujube or gingko either. But I did find some small pieces of dried chicken and leek…

Still, the chicken broth is pretty tasty and I really liked the mung bean noodles which are thick and chewy.

And it’s not quite as salty as other instant noodle products. (Samgyetang is meant to be a healthy dish after all!) On the scale of 1 to 8 (with 8 being a day’s recommended amount of salt), samgyetang rates as a 5. (see side of package)

samgyettang on boknal – the hottest day of the year

I am partial to a bowl of samgyetang now and again, but I DEFINITELY won’t be going to a samgyetang restaurant today. That’s because it’s malbok – the third of the three hottest days of the year according to the lunar calendar.

And on any of the three poknal days (chobok, chungbok, malbok) there are always LONG QUEUES of customers waiting to get in to the samgyetang restaurants! And although I’m British, I DO NOT like queueing!
