Octagon Pavilion

This is an octagon pavilion 팔각정 palgakjong. (The hanja is 八角亭 = 8 + sides + building). These pavilions are built in places which have open areas and nature, like parks. And they are built so that people can get together. Years ago the upper class yangban would gather at a pavilion to study and write poetry. This pavilion is in Boramae park in Dongjak-gu, Seoul. Here adjoshii, men, meet on warm days to play Korean board games – 바둑 baduk and 장기 janggi (Korean chess). In the background large modern apartment blocks tower over the park.
